Client Background:

A homeowner in Epsom contacted The Waterproofer to address issues with the dormer roofs on their property. The existing butynol membrane was past its prime, and the client sought a comprehensive solution for membrane and flashing replacement. They were doing a full clay roof replacement so dormers needed to be updated at the same time.

Challenges:

Several challenges were identified: The plywood on the dormers was thin and damaged, requiring replacement before new membrane installation. The client needed a solution that not only provided a new waterproofing membrane, but also addressed gaps in the woodwork around the dormers.

Solution:

The Waterproofer proposed a multi-step solution tailored to the client’s needs.

Process:
1. Wood Replacement: Builders on site replaced the damaged wood on the dormers to ensure a solid substrate for membrane installation.
2. TPO Membrane Installation: TPO membrane was applied to all three dormer areas, providing a durable and long-lasting waterproofing solution.
3. Drip Edge Flashings: Weldable TPO drip edge flashings were installed at the perimeter of each dormer to direct water into the spouting and prevent pooling.
4. Flashing Enhancement: New colour-coated metal flashings were installed around the sides of the dormers to encapsulate gaps in the woodwork and enhance waterproofing.
Outcome
The comprehensive waterproofing solution resulted in fully restored dormer roofs:
The TPO membrane provided superior waterproofing, ensuring long-term protection against leaks and water damage.
The addition of colour-coated metal flashings improved the aesthetic appearance of the dormers while providing additional protection against water ingress.
